The HeART of Sanctuary Project took place from March 2024 to March 2025 at Battersea Arts Centre. Funded by Wandsworth Borough Council's Borough of Sanctuary Fund, it brought together a diverse group of local Women, including refugees and asylum seekers, to connect with and encourage each other. Participants shared individual experiences, creating a nurturing space in which to enrich and celebrate their lives through compassionate communication, common humanity and the beauty of diversity and belonging. Workshops were creative, interactive and fun, including conversations over lunch, and opportunities to create and share pieces of art focusing on lived experience.
Hope in the Heart was honoured to collaborate with other organisations and networks in Wandsworth committed to creating a borough of sanctuary. These included Wandsworth Welcomes Refugess, South London Listens, BeWell, Citizens UK, 575 Wandsworth Road (National Trust), Wandsworth Borough Council, Wandsworth Care Alliance, and of course Battersea Arts Centre.
The most recent Messages from the HeART exhibition, at Battersea Arts Centre from 4th to 13th March, is the finale of the project. It features artwork from previous projects as well as from the HeART of Sanctuary.
